Day 3 Report
Saturday, 1st April 2017
Day 3 of the Indoor Juvenile Athletics Championships featured the middle distance events where MSB have traditionally been very strong.
The seven athletes did not disappoint.
Thomas Bolton running in the U12B 600m sent out a warning in his heat running from the front to take his heat in first place in a championship record of 1:42:02 beating the previous record by 0.22 of a second. The final proved to be a terrific race and it took yet another championship record of 1:40.37 to win the race and take MSB's first Gold medal of the championship!
In the U13G we had Gara Williams and Aoife Brown. Gara was in the first heat and ran a strong race but was bumped in the last 100m which took her off here stride and she came in 6th in a time of 1:50.77. Aoife ran in the second heat running a very composed race to come over the line in 4th place in a PB time of 1:47.17 to sneak into the final as a fastest loser. Aoife lined up in the final as the seventh fastest from the heats but once again ran a PB time of 1:46.42 to gain 4th place. This illustrates the endurance ability of the MSB athletes to run two races in the space of few hours and produce two PBs!
The U14G race saw Sadhbh Mohan take to the line. She ran a fantastically controlled race in her heat and cruised over the line in 3rd place in a time of 2:31.50 for automatic qualification to the final. With the energy conserved in qualification, Sadhbh produced a superb time in the final, some 11 seconds quicker, in a time of 2:20:05 to take 3rd place and thus a Bronze medal for MSB!
James Bolton lined up in the U14B 800m heat and, in a tough race, came over the line in 5th place in a time of 2:24.91 just over a second outside qualifying for the final.
Finn Woodger was up next in the U15B 800m. Once again, it was a tough and tight race. Finn was in a good position coming into the last lap but was bumped and lost three places and, despite running a 32 second last lap and a fast final 50m, his PB time of 2:17.43 just missed out on a place in the final by just over one second.
Molly Brown's race in the U17G 800m was a straight final. A few of the girls set off at a blistering pace but Molly's experience let her run a steady first 500m where she was some 20 metres from the lead runner. She ramped up the pace and hunted down the five runners in front of her with a fast-paced last 300 metres overhauling all but one of them to take a worthy Silver in a time of 2:17.99.
Three medals and four other fine performances for MSB on the final day of the indoor Championships was a fantastic way to end the event!
