Christmas Races 2017
Saturday, 23rd Dcember 2017
The annual Christmas Races took place last Saturday. Surprisingly, the weather was very mild and the ground was not too wet so the going was good.
There were three races with a mile race for the juveniles 12 and under, a 3-mile race for juveniles 13 and over and a 6-mile race for adults.
All races were handicap style races giving everyone a chance to win the coveted trophies.
The Sheila Brennan Trophy was on offer for the U12 race and some 40 kids lined up for the mile around the Athletics and GAA fields. Matthew Keane was first over the line, followed by Ethan Monahan and Cathal Tate in third.
Some 15 athletes from the U13 and above groups came to the start line for the Robert Foley Shield. James Monahan ran a very solid race taking the shield to add to his Glen Run Cup from earlier in the year to round off a superb year for the juvenile athlete.
The Doyle Cup has been running since 1939 and is the cup everyone wants to get their name on. There were over 20 athletes competing and Kenny McAndrew ran a great race to come over the line in first place to take the Doyle Cup.
The full list of the various category winners is as follows:
- First Place: Kenny McAndrew
- First Veteran: Alan King
- First Lady: Catherina Mullen
- Fastest Time: Sean Mac Seoin
See you all again next year!
